The main entrance of Casa da Pedra invites you to stop in the old, iron benches and to contemplate the garden and flirt with the sunset, while savoring a tea or a chalice of Port Wine. Here, when closing your eyes, you hear nothing but the birds twittering.
Casa da Pedra has a living room with a fireplace, whose silence and comfort appeal to conversation, board games or just relaxation. Every morning, in the adjacent room, breakfast is served with fresh products from the farm or neighbouring farmers. The crisp bread, just baked in the oven, is typical from this region and the homemade jams are made with fruit produced in the estate. According with the time of the year and availability of ingredients, you may taste the meat bread, cakes or scones, made early in the morning by my mother.
There is also a reading room with its walls covered with pictures of Amarante from the old days and where you can smell the fragrance of wisteria and Jasmin emanating from the patio. When the estate was divided and since the house had been closed for many years the furniture was in very poor condition and my mother had it restored. In Casa da Pedra, she mixed all the furniture, without prejudice, despite the different wood shades and styles.
On the breakfast table the fresh products from the farm or from the neighboring farmer stands out. The crisp bread, just baked in the oven, is typical from this region and the homemade jams are made with fruit produced in the estate. According with the time of the year and availability of ingredients, you may taste the meat bread, cakes or scones, made early in the morning by my mother. The yellow from the scrambled eggs, from the eggs à la coque or from the omelettes is proof of its origin: the chickens from the farm. Crowning the table the flower bouquets just picked from the garden.
On the site where now we have the pool the ground was narrower and the wide lawn, near the woods, didn’t exist yet. The site was comprised by small windrows and for that reason it became necessary to expand towards the hillside. Today, the pool area is one of the most enjoyable sites of the entire estate. The absolute privacy of this place, the almost total silence and the refuges that you can find here, make possible moments of complete relaxation, where quite often without realizing you fall asleep.
The House gardens have my mother’s touch, in every plant and in every tree planted by her. The roses with different and rare colors, the sweet and pure perfume of Jasmin, the untamed and rebel wisteria, the rosemary and lavender brought from the hills by the wind and the century-old Camellia trees defy the explorer to feel their scent and photograph their shapes. Also the tender, juicy, and irregular fruit trees result of growing free of artificial fertilizers and chemical treatments.
The Wood invites you to rest and leisure in its nooks and to unravel its mysteries. It has many viewpoints encouraging you to discover fresh water springs and bird nests. Since it is quite extent it is possible to make pleasant hikes, offering your body the pure oxygen from pines and eucalyptus and your soul the beauty and purity of the landscapes. I grew up in these hillsides. Here, I invented endless games together with my friends from the village, whose company I treasured deeply.
In the path connecting Casa da Pedra and Casa do Valinho it is possible to go back in time and find an ancient oven and barbecue, both made of stone, where it is possible to cook in a tastier and more natural way – with the heat from the fire and by turning the charcoal.
